LAO’s courses

A teaching method that combines artistic research,technical skills, contemporary design.

LAO has always based its teaching methods on artistic research and contemporary design, but starting from the acquisition of the technical skills needed in the work of every designer, jeweller or artist.

The courses have been designed and structured in a way that ensures adequate preparation for the needs of all students, with many hours of lessons taught by qualified teachers: over 20 teachers (craftspeople, artists, designers and professionals) work with the school, and other professionals and creators are invited each year for talks and seminare.

A total of 15 students per class are admitted: teachers have thus the opportunity to observe and evaluate the class as a whole but also to monitor every single student, stimulating and developing his/her abilities.

Lessons are held in Italian, and students from abroad are required to have a basic grasp of the language. Courses in other languages can be organised at the request of small groups.

ADDITIONAL SUBJECT

The History of Jewellery lessons included in the Jewellery Making and Design courses retrace – with the help of texts and slides – the most important periods in this art, from the Egyptians down to the principal historical companies: Cartier, Boucheron, Van Cleef & Arpels, Tiffany & Co., Bulgari, Mario Uccellati.
Jewellery Making second year and Jewellery design advanced students will have lessons on contemporary history of jewellery, focused on the artistic research in jewellery from the ’70 of the past century to the present days. The Gemmology Lessons, which form part of the Jewellery Making and Stone-setting courses, aim to introduce the students to the vast, fascinating world of the crystals, and to give them all the elements needed to identify the gems most commonly used in jewellery. Students have a range of stones available for study, and learn to use the most important gemmological instruments: polariscope, refractometer, microscope, hydrostatic balance…
